Int’l Students Experience Taiwan Culture through Tour Led by OICA

The Office of International and Cross-strait Affairs (OICA) led 216 students from Mainland China, Germany, Japan, and Malaysia to visit Che Cheng and the Sun Moon Lake in mid-October to experience the beauty of humanity and culture of Central Taiwan. The student buddies and international ambassadors trained by OICA served as either tour managers or tour guides. It was drizzling from time to time. However, the students enjoyed the painting-like views of the misty day, gaining unforgettable memories during their trip.

Che Cheng is a township located in Shuili, Nantou County. It is known for being the terminal station of Jiji Rail Line. This mountain town was prosperous for the logging industry, but the glory gradually faded. However, the old train station remains intact and becomes one of the most beautiful train stations in Taiwan. The deserted sawmill behind the station has been converted into a timber exhibition hall, which makes this town even more attractive. The students strolling along the old street, visiting the exhibition hall, or shopping for souvenirs imagined how prosperous the old town used to be.

The students then were led to the Wenwu Temple, where they can find their own “Birthday Stairs”, and Ita Thao Village at the Sun Moon Lake. In addition to tasting aboriginal snacks, they either had a boat tour or chose to cycle around the lake. The painting-like view unfolding before them became the most fascinating object of their camera lens. The last stop is the nearby Xiangshan Visitor Center, which was built with minimum elements such as waterscape, lawn and concrete to create a Zen spirit of simplicity. It offers the functions of customer service and sightseeing, enabling visitors to overlook and appreciate the beauty of the lake.
