More than thirty principals of the secondary schools sponsored by the Hong Kong Buddhist Association visited NCUEat the end of the year to learn about NCUE’s study environment for reference of their students. When meeting with the visitors, NCUE President Yen-Kuang Kuo expressed his wish that NCUE can attract more outstanding students from Hong Kong. The graduates from Hong Kong secondary schools that have signed the collaborative agreement with NCUE are eligible for the tuition and accommodation fee exemption if they are admitted to NCUE via the individual application or University independent admissions with their principal’s recommendation. Their on-campus housing during their study years is also guaranteed.

As the number of Hong Kong residents moving to Taiwan permanently has risen in recent years, so has the number of Hong Kong students studying in Taiwan. According to Ministry of Education, in the academic year 2016, the total number of the Hong Kong and Macau students studying in Taiwan was 13,431, of which nearly 8,200 were from Hong Kong, the most among all the overseas Chinese students. In 2016, Taiwan was chosen as the destiny for further studies by 28.6% of Hong Kong secondary school graduates who decided to study abroad, showing the importance of Taiwan in higher education for Hong Kong students. At present, there are nearly 40 students from Hong Kong at NCUE, next to Malaysia and Macau.

Led by Principal Mok Chung Fai of Buddhist Hung Sean Chau Memorial College, the delegation members include Chief Advisor Chih-Wen Li of the Power of Life Educational Company, Vice President Ming-Liang Kuo of Hong Kong Teachers' Association, high school principals and parents of high school students. Principal Mok praised NCUE for its quality of education and expected to have an in-depth understanding of the University for reference of their students planning further studies abroad.

President Kuo hosted the reception. He indicated that NCUE was ranked among the top 100 universities in the greater China region by ARWU. Aside from the 95% registration rate, NCUE has been awarded the Teaching Excellence Award by the Ministry of Education (MoE) for 11 successive years, showing evidence of its excellent performance. In 2017, NCUE was one of the five universities awarded by MoE for their sufficient counseling services for international students, offering the necessary support for Hong Kong and Macao students in adapting to the campus life in Taiwan.

President Kuo pointed out that NCUE is one of the three universities fostering high school teachers. With nearly thirty percent of Taiwan high school principals and teachers are NCUE alumni, NCUE plays an important role in the education system. In the past two decades, NCUE has gradually transformed into a comprehensive university with balanced development in various fields. Its alumni are highly recognized in Taiwan’s educational and industrial circles. NCUE is conveniently located in Central Taiwan with relatively low crime rate, lower living costs, and advanced medical environment. President Kuo looks forward to more Hong Kong students to study at NCUE.

At the reception, the Office of International and Cross-strait Affairs illustrated the services offered to overseas students. A student from Hong Kong majoring in Sports shared her learning experience at NCUE. Since NCUE won a great number of medals at the Taipei 2017 Universiade, many visitors expressed their interest in NCUE Department of Sports.
