Int’l Students Visit Sun Moon Lake to Experience Beauty of Taiwan’s Nature and People

The Office of International and Cross-strait Affairs (OICA) led 81 students from Mainland China and South Korea to visit the Sun Moon Lake and Che Cheng recently to experience the beauty of humanity and culture of Central Taiwan. It is a routine event held every semester. The students interacted with each other and learned better about Taiwan’s aboriginal culture as well as the development of local industries, making their studies more fruitful in Taiwan.

That was a sunny day and the spring was in the air, making the Sun Moon Lake more attractive. The students either had a boat tour or chose to cycle around the lake. The cool breeze touched the students’ faces and the lake stretched green and vast. The students enjoyed the beauty of the scenic lake and the mountain view around. Then they headed to the nearby Ita Thao Village where they tasted aboriginal snacks or shopped for souvenirs, experiencing the indigenous Thao food, arts, and culture.

The students then were led to the Wenwu Temple, where they could find their own “Birthday Stair” on which the names of famous figures born on the same day were carved. Some students prayed in the Palace of God of Love for love fortunes. The next stop is the nearby Xiangshan Visitor Center, which was built by a Japanese architect with minimum elements such as waterscape, lawn, and concrete to create a Zen spirit of simplicity. It offers the functions of customer service and sightseeing, enabling visitors to overlook and appreciate the beauty of the lake.

The last stop is Che Cheng, a township located in Shuili, Nantou County. It is known for being the terminal station of Jiji Rail Line. This mountain town was prosperous for the logging industry, but the glory gradually faded. However, the old train station remains intact and becomes one of the most beautiful train stations in Taiwan. The deserted sawmill behind the station has been converted into a timber exhibition hall, which makes this town even more attractive. The students strolled along the old street, visiting the exhibition hall, or shopping for souvenirs, drawing this one-day trip a perfect end.
