NCUE Cooperates with Chung Hwa Middle School in Brunei to Enrich Chinese Teaching Resources

NCUE and Chun Hwa Middle School (CHMS) in Brunei signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate the exchange of the two institutions. CHMS BOD Director, Mak Soon Seng, expressed his admiration for NCUE’s quality of education. He expects to enrich Brunei’s Chinese teaching resources by sending CHMS graduates and teachers to NCUE for further education, and introducing the expertise of special education from NCUE. This is NCUE’s first partnership established with Brunei’s educational institution. It is expected that the international reach of NCUE extends to more “New Southbound Policy” Countries.

CHMS, offering trilingual (Chinese, English and Malay) education, is a non-profit private institution whose history can be traced back to the York Choi School in 1918. The school was renamed CHMS in 1922. It is the most time-honored and largest Chinese school in Brunei, which is committed to passing on Chinese culture and connecting the school with the international community. Currently, there are over 3,000 students at CHMS.

Director Mak visited NCUE recently to sign the MOU. When meeting Director Mak, NCUE President Yen-Kuang Kuo extended a warm welcome and compared notes with him on the current state of Chinese education in Brunei and future cooperation between NCUE and CHMS as well.

Director Mak is former Deputy Secretary General of World Federation of Taiwan Alumni Associations and current Vice-chairperson of Taiwan Graduates Associations of Brunei. Given that NCUE is experienced in teacher training and special education, Director Mak expressed his hope that NCUE helps enrich CHMS’s teaching resources, including the improvement of teaching methods and curriculum designs, via teacher exchange and teaching training projects.

President Kuo is planning to visit Brunei next year. By visiting Chinese schools, he looks forward to getting a better understanding of their needs and deepening mutual relations.
